Herbie Hancock - Future Shock

Columbia CB741. 1983

Yet this does nothing for me. 80's twaddle.

I don't even like Rockit.

Sorry.

David Holmes - This Films Crap Lets Slash The Seats

Go! Discs 828 631-2. 1995

To insistant to be background music, too dull to be listened to in its own right.

Let's keep the film soundtracks for the films, eh?

"The Atom And You" threatens to be an early The Orb track for 3 minutes, then fails.

Ho Hum etc.

David Holmes introducting the Free Association - Come Get It I Got It

13Amp AMP001CD. 2002

There's a reason most of the tracks on here are 'obscure'. They're 90% shite.

Hüsker Dü - Warehouse: Songs and Stories

Warner Bros 25544-2. 1987

Maybe they should have got a producer in. This is weak and, at times, annoying. The guitar sits on its own over there, the drums, with that ever-present bloody innapropriate snare reverb, yonder, and the bass flaps into the mix only briefly here and there.

It does have moments when everything comes together nicely, but for me it's only the combination of Mould and Harts vocals that keep me interested. Most of the songs seem rushed and throw-away.

Highlights (or the only bits worth skipping on to): Ice Cold Ice, Could You Be The One, She Floated Away

Hollyfaith - Bliss (single)

Creation crescd116. 1993

See below, only shorter.

Hollyfaith - Purrr

Creation crecd163. 1993

Unremarkable, but inoffensive, guitary pop-rock from some American chaps that didn't last very long and spent too much time analysing the My Bloody Valentine strumming while holding your trem bar technique and not quite pulling it off.

This must have been a quid somewhere, as there's no way I'd have paid real money for it.

4hero - Creating Patterns

Talkin Loud. 2001

I kept hearing Les Fleur on the pub jukebox, and eventually got off my lazy arse to see what it was. So I went out and bought this (no, I didn't just download it! We're not all like that).

I wish I had. Apart from LF this doesn't do much for me. Nu-jazzsoul electronica in a similar style to some earlier mentioned Cinematic Orchestra.

I'm just not bothered.

Funkadelic - America Eats It's Young

Westbound Records WBOXPD1 (4 CD box set). 1972

I prefer slightly earlier Funkadelic stuff. There's way too much in the way of horns, strings and piano on here.

Some of this gets a bit Sesame Street, and some is just plain rubbish (Everybody is going to make it this time / We hurt too - shit the bed!)

Then they go and throw Loose Booty at ya! God bless the funk.

Mostly bloody awful this one.

Jad Fair and Yo La Tengo - Strange But True

Matador OLE309-2. 1998

Imagine Yo La Tengo in lazy/slightly silly mode with Jad Fair singing/talking.

I like Yo La Tengo. I'm starting to resent Jad Fair's presence in my music collection.

Did I mention Jad Fair stayed at my house? I should have took him out when I had the chance.

The Fall - Oswald Defence Lawyer

Receiver RRCD213. 1996

I'm quite picky with The Fall.

This is all live.

I'm even pickier with live stuff.

Bad combination.

Though this has some great songs on it, the live thing just doesn't do it for me.

The Future Sound Of London - Lifeforms (Single)

Virgin VSCDT 1484. 1994

The least shit of all the FSOL stuff so far. Almost listenable.

Almost.

Liz Fraser and Tavlin Singh should be ashamed of themselves for being involved in this.

Foo Fighters - The Colour And The Shape

RCA. 1997

Not even the 60mg of codeine currently alleviating the pain in my back can help this.

Only the chart-friendly Monkey Wrench and Everlong would tempt me to pick it from the shelf again.

The Flaming Lips - Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots

Warner Bros. 2002

Flaming Lips for your mamma. With the exception of the beautiful Do You Realise?? I could gladly put this in the bin.

I liked them before they were a famous comedy cabaret band, so there.

FM Einheit - Fruehlingserwachen (Single)

Some Bizzare SBZ12001CD. 1990

Not entirely shite commercialish techno fayre. FM goes Adamski.

Spring Awakening though? Fucking hippy.

FM Einheit - Stein

Some Bizzare SBZCD006. 1990

The Neubauten monkey goes all solo industrial electronic. Not particularly successfully as far as I'm concerned.

Fairly pedestrian stuff with the odd clanging quirk to remind you who's behind it.

I hope that was his girlfriend singing on the first track. If he got someone in specially to do that shite he wants a kick in the arse.

Track 10, Anna, has a nice close-up recording of a cat purring. He was copying me - I did the same with the aforemetioned Chester at around the same time.

Einstürzende Neubauten - Tabula Rasa

Mute/Our Choice/Rough Trade Beton106cd. 1993

I was almost as disappointed with this as I was when Butthole Surfers shat on my face with Pioughd.

I'm not against progress and evolution, but this was a step back as far as I'm concerned. Could have eased up on the compressor on the bass.

We're offered respite from the tedium with the last track, Headcleaner, which comes across like older EN in bed with Godflesh. For 15 minutes.

How much is laser tattoo removal?

18 Wheeler - Stay (CD1)

Creation CRESCD249. 1997

Five mixes of one song. I'm not even going to say anything.

18 Wheeler - Grease ep

Creation CRESCD255. 1997

Again, three mixes of the same track, as well as the remix on the previous single. Christ almighty - just write some tunes. Track 2 - they've just taken the beats from Prodigy's Firestarter (the rhythms, not actually sampled) and stuck it over elements of the melody. Once again, that's not a remix, it's an entirely different track as far as I'm concerned. Lazy. Remix no.2 is all over the place, off it's tits, and awkward for the sake of it.

Bentley Rhythm Ace contribute a remix of some other shite as track 4 just to piss me off and spoil my day.

Original song is ok though.

18 Wheeler - Stay ep

Creation CRESCD249x. 1997

I must have liked this, as I've got both disks in the 2 CD set.

Ok, but 3 mixes of the same track, plus a remix of another single. Poo-pah.

18 Wheeler - Prozac Beats ep

Creation CRESCD21. 1996

Passable big-beat indie.

Won't make it onto the deck regularly, but too good for the charity bag.
